The Museums and Libraries Association has a membership of over 5000. This year Manchester Central was home to their annual Museums Association Conference & Exhibition 2010 with delegates from the UK and overseas. On the second day the Manchester Save Energy pilot hosted a seminar called “The Art of Green: Encouraging Energy Efficiency through Behavioural Change“. The seminar outlined how the Save Energy project is supporting the Manchester Art Gallery in its bid to reduce energy consumption through the installation of new lighting and behaviour transformation actions.

The seminar was presented by Principal Manager of Visitor Services and Operations at Manchester Art Gallery, Catriona Morgan and Professor Eric Bichard from Salford University. Catriona focused on the background to the initiatives and details of the energy monitoring whilst Eric’s talked about some of the issues and psychology behind behaviour change.

There was an excellent audience of over 15 delegates from various art galleries and museums around the country including overseas (Bahrain). Some of the attendees were already involved in energy efficiency initiatives in their own institutions as well a number looking at ways to save energy in the future.

Price

£300

Max number of participants: 16

About the Workshop

The iPhone 4⁴ workshop is aimed at developers coming from other languages who want to learn Cocoa and Objective-C. The three-day, highly participatory, intensive workshop will cover the Objective-C language and various aspects of the Cocoa frameworks: constructing user interfaces, interacting with device features such as GPS/camera/accelerometer/gyroscope and interacting with remote data sources and APIs.

Participants will be organised into small teams (of around 4 people, preferably not people they work with already!) for the practical elements of the workshop, to create real, working applications.

The course will be led by Sam Easterby-Smith – an established coder and trainer who has worked on various iPhone and iPad projects including the Times newspaper iPad app and his own Gigometer. He has run numerous iPhone training workshops with UKOLN and North-West Vision and Media over the last year and is very pleased to be offering his second course at the Madlab. For more about Sam see his corporate site: http://spotlightkid.co.uk

Book your places now on Eventbrite

IMPORTANT
Participants will need to bring a Mac Laptop running Snow Leopard & any iOS devices they might have.

HEALTH WARNING
The learning curve of Objective-C is quite steep and involve heavy use of object-orientation so this course is NOT RECOMMENDED for those new to programming. HTML and CSS do not count as programming. C++, Ruby and Java developers will be fine. Actionscript’ers and PHP’ers should be ok as long as they are familiar with OO concepts

Have fun with Arduinos with this 1-day workshop covering the basics – what you need to know, a hands-on introduction into what you can make it do, how to get the most out of the platform and some ideas for where you can take it next.

Cost is £65 which includes a starter kit from Oomlout containing all the bits you need to get going including the Arduino board itself.

We really hope that you’ll come down and check this out – we’ve kept the costs as low as we can, to give more people the chance to get involved!

Innovate with Confidence is a new programme that will enable SMEs to open the doors to innovating quickly, reliably and successfully in a changing world.

Innovate with Confidence is a new programme that will enable SMEs to open the doors to innovating quickly, reliably and successfully in a changing world.

During a course of four workshops, managers of Greater Manchester SMEs will work with experts such as Nigel Newman of the Edward de Bono Foundation UK, one of only 5 global lifetime master trainers, Jim O’Loughlin who enables senior global executives to enhance their strategic decision making and Mike Ryan, Secretary of Manchester Digital.

The practical 1-day workshops combine insights from business model engineering, neuroscience and practical thinking skills to help leaders develop a fresh perspective to apply current solutions to overcome their immediate business challenges.

The scheme has been described as “a groundbreaking opportunity” by Greater Manchester Chamber’s President, Moneeb Awan, who adds, “Irrespective of the size of your business, the practical benefits of Innovate with Confidence are hugely important. SMEs will learn to develop the tools, embody the perspective and cultivate the contacts to make successful innovation an in-built habit.”

Register to attend the second series of courses

There are just 25 places on the scheme available to Greater Manchester based SMEs. With a waiting list forming as soon as the first course sold out, we expect that this final series of Innovate with Confidence will sell out as quickly as the first series, so don’t delay. Act now to secure your place at www.InnovatewithConfidence.com

We are keen to ensure that this final run of the programme leaves a lasting legacy to a wide range of businesses across Greater Manchester – so we’d appreciate if you could forward the information above onto any businesses you feel would really benefit from the opportunity to ‘Innovate with Confidence’.
