A University of Salford digital media lecturer has created a new kind of social networking map which lets members of the public discuss businesses and buy their products.

Maxamundo has been created by Mick Lockwood, a lecturer in the School of Art & Design, and combines the best features of social networks like Google maps, Facebook and eBay to create a unique online marketplace.
Unlike other sites, Maxamundo is managed by the people who leave photos, videos and reviews. Businesses can also stake their claim to their premises on the map and set up links to their websites so that people can buy their products.

Maxamundo is very much a Mancunian creation, with most of the locations in the current version based in the region, but as Mick explains the site is almost limitless in its potential.

“Maxamundo really does help people get back to the street market kind of approach,” he said. “Businesses and the public anywhere in the UK can interact on the map and add their own tags on a face-to-face basis and, as a result, interactions become much more informative for both sides.”

Mick is now looking for further investment to improve Maxamundo with an iPhone app that lets people use the website as they move around. He is also looking at developing a historical element of the site which lets people post pictures and information about the history of locations in Salford.

To look at Maxamundo and register with the site go to: http://www.maxamundo.com/cms/
