If you are a voluntary or community sector organisation, freelancer or creative who would like to know more about "digital technology" and how it can help your work or your organisation it can sometimes be difficult to know where to go for advice and support.

About this event…

If you are a voluntary or community sector organisation, freelancer or creative who would like to know more about “digital technology” and how it can help your work or your organisation it can sometimes be difficult to know where to go for advice and support.

Yet Manchester has a wide range of digital communities – from programmers, to social media specialists to digital content producers – who meet up regularly to share good practice.

Connecting 2.0 Communities give’s anyone in the not-for-profit sector an opportunity to meet these digital communities – many of whom are happy to provide free advice and support, and would like to work more with community groups.

Watch a video of the First Connecting 2.0 Communities event here.

What you will find out…

At this free to attend “drop in” event there will be an opportunity to :-

- get a one-to-one advice session about your own particular digital needs
- find out more about Manchester’s many “user groups” and informal meet-ups
- hear short introductions about key topics and about other opportunities in the city

Registration

Registration is online at http://c2cnovember.eventbrite.com

Where and when does it take place…

The event takes place on Wednesday 17th November from 2.00-6.30pm at the Madlab (Manchester Digital Laboratory), at 36-40 Edge Street, Manchester, M4 1HN, in the Northern Quarter (opp. Common Bar) Drop in any time after 2.00 – either stay for a short time, or stay all afternoon.

2.00-4.30 Drop in any time you want

4.30-5.30 Panel discussion on Social Media

5.30-5.45 Questions to the panel

5.45-6.30 Drop in Continues

Why register…

It’s a drop-in so you don’t have to book a place to attend, but if you do, we can send you an update on the lineup, and also you can let us know if you have any access requirements. The drop-in is on the ground floor of Madlab, but the presentations may take place on the 2nd floor and there is no lift, so please let us know if this is a problem so that we can make arrangements accordingly.

I can’t come for the whole event…

We’ve arranged the event to be as flexible as possible. If you want to come at 2.00 and stay all afternoon, or come at 6.00 for the last half hour that’s absolutely fine. The city centre location means that if you are passing through town after work then you can pop in. So don’t worry if you’re not able to come for the whole afternoon.

It sounds great, but I’m busy that day…

We will be running a further Connecting 2.0 Communities event at Madlab in late January.

Tech IPO – Meet Marcus Stuttard, CEO of AIM

Facebook is now being valued at more than $33bn (£21.3bn) as investors try to secure a stake in the social networking site in anticipation of its flotation on the US stock market (Guardian). Put this in contrast with the value of some of the best known tech companies: Apple: $219bn, Microsoft: $208bn, IBM: $157bn, Google: $143bn, Cisco: $120bn, Intel: $102bn, HP: $89bn, eBay: $30bn, Dell: $22bn and Yahoo: $18bn.

Most of us dream of listing our tech companies one day. Some of us have already achieved this dream or in the process of going through such a journey. If listing is an option for your company, you need to start preparing for it now as the time period from decision to IPO could well take 3 years or more.

If you are interested or involved in IPOs, this is the event for you. Our key objective is to stimulate the discussion of listings once again in the north west of England.

Speakers and Panelists (more to be added)

Marcus Stuttard, CEO, London Stock Exchange – Alternative Investment Market (AIM)

Anish Kapoor – ex CFO Telecity and CEO Yuuguu.com

The Inspiring Digital Engagement Festival is a one-day event that explores the contribution of arts practice to the business of digital inclusion. Local art practitioners, digital inclusion researchers, public sector professionals and community development workers are invited to join us for an active investigation into how socially engaged arts practice promotes, enriches and challenges notions of digital inclusion.

We increasingly use digital tools for everything: to find jobs, to socialise, to shop, even to define who we are. Thus it is urgent to ensure that everyone is able to make an informed choice about using the Internet
and related technologies. Of the 17 million people in the UK who currently don’t use the Internet it is believed that 6 million of these are both socially and digitally excluded. We celebrate the arrival of the Digital
Region in South Yorkshire by asking: beyond access what is necessary to support people in exploring their potential?

Socially engaged art projects are the unsung success stories of digital engagement. They may be small in scope and intensive in execution, but they point the way to new processes and methods of interest in enfranchising the communities overlooked by more broadbrushed or centralised approaches. Through panel discussions, talks, demonstrations and participatory activities the Inspiring Digital Engagement Festival will focus on the following questions:

- What does art bring that policy doesn’t?

- How far can digital inclusion be facilitated without personal mediation
and stewardship?

- Is it appropriate to expect artistic practice to conform to public sector
metrics?

Take away:
- Inspiration for digital inclusion strategies
- New networks of practitioners facing the same challenges as you
- A more rounded sense of what we can hope for and why we are trying to achieve digital interdependence.

Contacting the World is a pioneering, biennial festival and collaborative project for young people across the globe. Since the first Contacting the World in 2002, it has inspired innovation, creativity, inter-cultural dialogue and genuine collaboration amongst hundreds of young people.

Produced by Contact, it is a programme of exchange involving 150 young theatre makers from 12 different companies across the world, who are randomly twinned to work creatively and collaboratively over a six month period, culminating in a vibrant UK based performance festival.

It launched in 2002 as a direct result of the Commonwealth Games Cultural Programme and has since involved over 30 countries including companies from Syria, Pakistan, Trinidad, Nepal, Brazil, Turkey, Malaysia, New Zealand and Rwanda. Partners have included the British Council, Visiting Arts and Liverpool Capital of Culture with support from trusts and foundations and local businesses.

What is Young Rewired State?

Young Rewired State 2010 is essentially a hack week for young developers across the country to go and build visualisations, digital and/or non-digital products using government data, alongside working developers in businesses across the UK. These will be presented back to government at the end of the week, either in person, or by live stream from wherever you are based.

It is open to anyone aged 15 to 18 (although certain businesses may not be able to take the under-16s) who can work with data, coding or design.

Chris will tell us about some of the advantages and pitfalls of working with open data, including the valuable lesson of “learning to fail”… (see slides from his presentation at Future Everything)
