Birth of The Baby: 60th Anniversary Celebrations

A new website has been launched to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Baby Computer.

On June 21st, 1948, at Manchester University, shortly after 11 o’clock in the morning, the world’s first stored-program electronic digital computer successftilly executed its first program. That program was written by Tom Kilburn who, along with Freddie Williams designed and built the machine. It was called the Small- “Scale Experimental Machine, but was soon nicknamed “The Baby”.

2008 is the 60th anniversary of the world’s first stored program digital computer. To celebrate this achievement the University of Manchester has organised a number of activities to take place in the run up to the anniversary and on Friday 20 June 2008.

The Kilburn lecture will see Prof. Steve Furber track “The Relentless March of the Microchip.” Registration for this event is now open. This is sure to be a popular event, so to guarantee your place you will need to register.
