Although Windows XP is being retired from sale for new PCs, Microsoft released Service Pack 3 in May 2008.

This is mainly a collection of previous security updates with little in the way of new features, so it’s is unlikely to break your system.

Nevertheless as ever you probably want to read the release notes to see if you are likely to be affected before installing on a critical machine.
